Self-Publishing VS. Traditional Publishing 📖 5 Factors to Consider
Are you thinking about self-publishing? 📖
There are pros and cons to both self publishing and traditional publishing, and both are valid options.
So how do you choose?
Here are 3 things to consider:
1✨ Is your ideal reader someone the publishing houses are marketing towards? For example, I knew I was writing my debut novel primarily for the Christian homeschool world, which is not a market that the big houses are targeting at this time.
2✨ Is your book something the publishing houses are looking for? If not, it would probably be a better use of your time to start down the self-publishing path, rather than go through the many steps of pitching to the big houses only to get your book rejected because it's not a good fit.
3✨ Would you prefer to control every aspect of your book or leave things like cover design and formatting to the publishing house? Controlling all the little details appeals to some writers (like myself), but others are much more comfortable just focusing on the writing and revising.
Another important factor to consider is that you are going to have to market your book regardless. If you think the publishing houses will do it all for you, that's usually not the case. Unless the publisher thinks your book is going to be the new big "thing" or you're already a popular author, you're not going to get a big display in Barnes & Noble. All authors, no matter what path they choose, should expect to celebrate their work and share it on social media to help reach potential readers.
